TRAVEL GEAR HAUL

storytelling for the free spirited

These are the products I rely on to keep me doing my job when overseas, mostly for humanitarian photography work. You don’t have to spend a fortune on products either; I purchased these items affordably + they’ve lasted me a couple years so far. Here are my tested + true travel items:

Takeoff

LUSH Bath Bomb

Planning to get everything done a day in advance so I can spend the last day before takeoff resting helps me arrive at my destination ready for a wild adventure.

These LUSH bath bombs explode all kids of essential oils + invigorating scents for the best relaxation bath. I soak before bed to relax my muscles + get the best sleep before a day of flying.

Bluetooth Headphones + RFID Passport Holder

I absolutely love jamming to music while I walk laps around the airport before flights to kill some energy. These headphones are perfect on-the-go because I can walk with my phone in my bag. This passport holder protects from identity theft while on the move!

Dry Bags

These are so incredible useful! Not only do they condense all my clothes down to take up a small amount of luggage space, but they are waterproof. If I need to go somewhere in the rain or have all my gear on a sketchy boat, I can keep electronics safe in these.

Water Canteen

25oz of pure cold refreshment–seriously, there’s nothing worse than being so thirsty on a 27-hour round of flights. I also fill it up every night with purified water to put in the fridge + it’s cold all day long on the job where there’s no drinking water.

This is a must-have!

Random Mini/Carry-On Items

I put these mini/smaller products in my carry-on because they are super nice to have on the plane or in other countries without taking up all that space: toothbrush + toothpaste, lotion, advil, kleenex, gum, sunscreen, granola bars, hand sanitizer, hair comb.

 A Good Poetry Book

Books are heavy + take up too much space, so I download any new ones I want to read on Audible, which has made my carry-on a lot lighter! However, I love bringing good poetry along with me on a journey + it just feels right to have one good, old fashioned book.

The Key to Amazing Airplane Sleep: Inflatable Neck Pillow, Sleep Mask, + Ear Plugs!

Everything fits inside a pocket in the neck pillow, and it deflates to fit inside my backpack. With all these items on me, I’ve been able to sleep soundly for nine hours!

The Photographer’s Ultimate Backpack

One of my greatest finds! Everything mentioned above + more fits in this bag. I scoured the web for a backpack small enough to slide under an airplane seat, but large enough to carry all my photography gear. It has sections for four lenses (85mm, 35mm, fisheye, 70-200mm) and a body (Nikon d750), a 15 inch laptop, personal items section at the top, three small additional pockets, and a water bottle pocket. You’re welcome 😉

ARRIVAL

The One World Futbol

This indestructible ball is part of an amazing initiative to reach poverty-stricken communities + teach conflict resolution, gender equality, health awareness + more. Standard soccer balls don’t last long for kids in rural areas, but this one lives forever. I recently discovered this product from a friend, and will be bringing one overseas every time I travel! So far it’s been a hit.

Travel Sheet

This simple sleeping bag liner can be used to put inside the hotel bed sheets, when ya don’t know if the sheets are washed regularly. There are also more expensive ones with nets that enclose your head for extra protection from mosquitoes while sleeping.

Polaroid Camera + Film

The most fun to bring to the village! While cash + candy aren’t the best gifts to give to kids, these polaroids will make them burst into laughter + serve as a longer-lasting gift.

I love the wide version because the photos are bigger.

Skyroam Global Wifi

This personal hotspot allows you to connect to your own wifi wherever your travel. You purchase day passes + once activated, you get unlimited wifi for the day.

It’s super important to stay connected while I’m traveling, and this little guy does the trick!

All-In-One Adapter

If you’re not sure what kind of adapter you’ll need, this one is perfect because it plugs in almost anywhere.

Black Diamond Lantern + Headlamp

Because ya just never know when there will be power.

Travel Diffuser + Essential Oils

This is my car diffuser is small enough to double as a travel item! It also doesn’t use water which is a plus.

My favorite oils to bring on an adventure is Clove for relaxation + Tea Tree for when I’m feeling sick or breaking out. I keep this Lavender roller inside my carry-on + put it on when I’m trying to sleep.

Coffee Aeropress

It’s practically weightless + makes a perfect cup of coffee.

MSR Pocket Rocket, Fuel, + GSI Cookset

This is my stove setup when I need to whip up a meal or boil water super quick. All you need is a lighter, and you can use the cup as a pot by removing the sleeve. Comes with a potholder + lid.

ENO Hammock

This is the ultimate anywhere bed! Hang from a porch, between two trees, or anywhere if you get creative enough.

JBL Clip Speaker

Tiny yet incredible sound quality! If I’m on a shoot I’ll attach it to my camera + play some vibe-setting music, or use it during relaxing days at the hotel, and it’s just loud enough to fill a whole village with music.

RETURN

LaCie 2TB Hard Drive

I’m ordering these every 6 months to make sure I have every single image backed up twice. After having a hard drive crash on me this is more than a life saver!! I use a system of 2’s with photos: always writing to two memory cards at a time, then when I get to the hotel putting all the photos on a hard drive, still keeping all photos on one memory card, and once I return home I copy all the photos onto another hard drive. This system keeps you from ever losing any data or having to pay hefty repair fees.

Kimberly Snyder Detoxy+

Whenever I return from foreign countries, my digestion feels off for a few weeks. These supplements get everything back on track + cleanse any weird toxins I ate from my digestive system.
