RIVER SONG GALA CARNIVALE

storytelling for the free spirited

FORT COLLINS, CO

If you’ve spent time in a classroom these days, you know there is A LOT of work kids must do to get those coveted straight A’s. They may have the occasional ‘recess break’ for 15 minutes every few hours, but the moment the bell rings to get back to work, kids are looking out the window, longing for their next recess.

At River Song Waldorf School, it seems as if recess is eternal. As kids enter into the whimsical cottage, free-spirited teachers invite them into a world of learning outside, from nature, doing things with their hands and from their hearts. They learn to feel at home in school.

It’s a whole new world, different from anything kids experience – most significantly, being media-free. River Song believes in educating the whole child: head, hands + heart, with story, song, art, and puppetry. They make music themselves + create bread from scratch, while learning how the earth forms itself by immersion within the outdoors.

I had the privilege of photographing their 2nd Annual Gala this month, where locals  came out to support this vision of kids learning by laughing and running free.

If there’s one thing to be learned with nonprofit funding, it’s that having something to offer in return for funds will get the job done! In this case, live music, aerial performers, dancing tunes, world famous Mexican food, tons of amazing silent auction items, + a little bit of margarita brought in the masses. The room was vibrant in anticipation for this Brazilian Carnival-themed party.
As guests arrived, margaritas were mixed, aerial dancers took the stage, and latino music from Brazilian Band Chegando La filled the room with vibes of celebration. It was a celebration of more than just a new facility to run the nonprofit out of; it was a zest for life, a rallying of the community to promote a freedom they believe in.
A major event highlight was the unbelievable aerial dancing put on by Live Beyond Limit and AnikolovArts. Performers used various materials to dance in the air.
Guests feasted on Rio Grande Mexican food and watched a promotional video of kids in action at the school, before beginning an exciting live auction!
The auction successfully raised necessary funds for the new building the school will use next fall. Guests ended the night dancing to DJ Nuñez. As the salsa music filled the air, we were all reminded of what every human desires; three or forty-two. Freedom.
River Song fulfills a need our children long for & provides a service to our Northern Colorado community. Learn more at the school’s page:
